Boxing Champion Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Nigeria Car Crash
OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – December 23, 2025 – Boxing champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a fatal car crash in Nigeria on Monday, according to local officials. The accident, which occurred on the Ogun-Lagos Expressway, resulted in the deaths of two other individuals.
Joshua, a three-time heavyweight champion who recently defeated Jake Paul in a high-profile bout on December 19th, was riding in the back seat of a Lexus when one of the tires reportedly burst. This caused the driver to lose control and collide with a parked truck, according to Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunwalo.
An eyewitness told Nigeria’s The Punch that there were four occupants in Joshua’s vehicle, including the driver, Joshua, and two other passengers. Joshua’s security detail was traveling in a separate vehicle behind them at the time of the crash.
While Joshua suffered minor injuries, authorities confirmed the deaths of two other individuals involved in the accident. The boxer, who is of British Nigerian descent and spent part of his childhood in Nigeria, is reportedly doing fine otherwise.
Joshua most recently secured his 29th professional win with a knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami, Florida. He previously held the WBA Super Heavyweight Championship, IBF Heavyweight Championship, and WBO Heavyweight Championship before losing the titles to Oleksandr Usyk in September 2021.
The timeline for Joshua’s return to the ring remains uncertain.
