UN Warns Impunity for Violence Against Women Fueling Global Conflicts
New York, NY – The United Nations is sounding the alarm about the escalating violence against women and girls in conflict zones worldwide, warning that impunity for these crimes is directly fueling instability and hindering peace efforts. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, in a recent interview with Al Jazeera, highlighted a disturbing trend of unchecked violence in conflict areas like Sudan, Gaza, Syria, and Afghanistan.
“Violence against women is not a side issue but a front-line threat to peace and development,” Mohammed stated. She cited the mass rapes in Sudan, attacks on schools and shelters in Gaza and Syria, and the systematic segregation of women in Afghanistan as stark examples of the collapsing protection for women in wartime.
The UN deputy chief emphasized that the international community is failing to adequately address the issue, citing shrinking funding and a faltering political will as major obstacles. The lack of accountability for perpetrators is creating a climate where such atrocities can continue with little fear of consequence.
The UN’s warning comes amid growing concerns that violence against women is not only a symptom of conflict but a deliberate tactic used to destabilize communities and undermine social cohesion. Experts argue that addressing this issue is crucial for achieving lasting peace and sustainable development.
