Sun Dec 28 09:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Hawkins Resident Still Doesn’t Get It: “Stranger Things” Season 5 Strains Credibility
Hawkins, Indiana – Despite gaping chasms tearing through the town, a heavy military presence, and a general sense of unease, some residents of Hawkins, Indiana are apparently still living in blissful ignorance, according to the latest episode of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”
Season 5, episode 6, titled “Escape from Camazotz,” focuses on the continuing romantic relationship between fan-favorite character Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) and her girlfriend, Vickie Dunne (Amybeth McNulty). While Robin is finally experiencing happiness in her personal life amidst the ongoing supernatural chaos, the show seems to be stretching the limits of believability.
In a scene at the local hospital, Robin attempts to explain the truth about the Upside Down and the dangers facing Hawkins to Vickie. However, Vickie dismisses her concerns, immediately assuming Robin is under the influence of drugs.
This reaction has sparked criticism among viewers, who point out that the town experienced a devastating “earthquake” (as the media is portraying it) that opened massive portals to another dimension at the end of season 4. The chasms and destruction remain visible, and the town is heavily guarded by military personnel. Yet, Vickie, like other supporting characters, seems willfully blind to the unsettling reality around her.
“It’s just uncomfortable to see the show turn Vickie into yet another example of a supporting character who refuses to believe a main character about the supernatural situation of the town’s predicament despite all that’s happened,” one fan stated on social media.
While the show’s writers may be attempting to maintain the theme of ordinary people being unaware of the supernatural horrors lurking beneath the surface, this plot device has been criticized as becoming increasingly contrived. Some viewers argue that it strains credibility to believe that residents would remain oblivious to the obvious signs of otherworldly activity.
Fortunately, Vickie eventually comes around later in the episode, suggesting that at least some of the townsfolk are starting to grasp the truth. However, the episode raises questions about how long the show can sustain this narrative tension without the non-main characters seemingly becoming a little oblivious.
“Stranger Things” season 5, volume 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
