Washington D.C. – Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is confident that Democrats will retake the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, paving the way for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to become Speaker. In an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week,” Pelosi praised Jeffries as “eloquent, respected, and a unifier,” expressing absolute certainty in his future leadership.
Pelosi, who stepped down from House leadership in November 2022 and will not seek reelection in 2026, also stated that Democrats, upon regaining control, need to reclaim Congress’s powers, which she believes have been ceded to former President Trump by the current Republican-led Congress.
While she wouldn’t commit to a third impeachment of Trump, Pelosi emphasized that any such decision would depend on Trump’s future actions and potential constitutional violations. She noted the importance of utilizing subpoena power to obtain information from government agencies currently withholding it.
Reflecting on her career, Pelosi highlighted the Affordable Care Act as a landmark achievement she hopes to be remembered for, citing its impact on working families’ health and financial well-being.
Pelosi also addressed her tumultuous relationship with Trump, particularly the January 6th Capitol attack. Calling it “horrible,” she blamed Trump for inciting an insurrection and lamented his attempts to rewrite the day’s events. She confirmed that the Justice Department dropped the federal cases against Trump after he won the presidential election in 2024, though he pleaded not guilty.
With a year remaining in her term, Pelosi’s focus remains on helping Democrats win back the House. “I’m busy and focused on winning the House for the Democrats, making Hakeem Jeffries the Speaker of the House, and to take us to a better place,” she said.
