Guinea Holds First Presidential Election Since 2021 Coup; Junta Leader Expected to Win

CONAKRY, GUINEA – December 28, 2025 – Guineans headed to the polls today in the country’s first presidential election since the 2021 coup that ousted President Alpha Conde. Analysts predict a likely victory for junta leader General Mamadi Doumbouya, who has consolidated power by clamping down on opposition and dissent.

The election marks the culmination of a four-year transition process initiated after the coup. While Guinea is rich in mineral resources like bauxite, over half of its 15 million citizens face poverty and food insecurity. Voters, particularly young unemployed individuals, expressed hope for improved living standards.

The election is held under a new constitution, controversially approved in a referendum, that allows military leaders to run for office and extends presidential terms. Political analyst Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite stated that Doumbouya is the favorite because the opposition has been sidelined and the General Directorate of Elections is under government supervision. Civil society groups have also reported silenced voices and press censorship since the coup.

Security was tight throughout the country, with nearly 12,000 police officers deployed. Authorities announced the “neutralization” of an armed group with “subversive intentions” a day before the vote.

Doumbouya faces eight other candidates, including Yero Balde, a former Education Minister. Prominent opposition figures like Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure are in exile. Doumbouya’s campaign has centered on infrastructure projects and reforms since taking power, including the major Simandou iron ore project.

Results are expected within 48 hours, with a runoff election planned if no candidate secures a majority. Voter turnout was strong, with many expressing a desire for positive change in the country.
