Veteran CPI(M) Leader K.M. Sudhakaran Passes Away at 90
KOCHI, KERALA – December 28, 2025 – K.M. Sudhakaran, a prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and a dedicated trade unionist, died today at a private hospital in North Paravur, Kochi. He was 90 years old.
Mr. Sudhakaran, a long-standing member of the CPI(M) State committee for 35 years and former State treasurer of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), had been receiving treatment for age-related ailments. He passed away at 5:30 AM.
Having entered politics full-time in 1956, leaving his job as a toddy tapper, Sudhakaran became a key organizer for farmers in Vypeen. He actively participated in numerous significant movements, including the transport strike of 1954, protests advocating for land reforms in 1970, and the toddy tappers’ struggle in 1993. He was also imprisoned for 16 months during the Emergency period.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan have expressed their condolences, with the Chief Minister stating that the state has lost a senior revolutionary leader.
Mr. Sudhakaran is survived by his wife, J. Prabhavathi, a retired employee of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, and their four children: K.S. Jayashree, Jayan, Jayaraj, and Jaisy.
The final rites for Mr. Sudhakaran will be held at 5:30 PM today at his residence in Kalavanpara, Nayarambalam, Ernakulam.
