Sat Dec 27 23:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Congress Party Plagued by “Sleeper Cells,” Senior Leader Claims
New Delhi: A Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Saturday was rocked by allegations from Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, who claimed the party is riddled with “sleeper cells” and suffers from significant organizational weaknesses.
Singh’s remarks ignited a firestorm both within and outside the party. He stated that while Congress talks of movements and protests, it lacks a strong ground-level organization to effectively implement them. He contrasted this with the BJP and RSS, praising their organizational strength and ability to elevate grassroots workers to positions of power. Prior to the meeting, Singh even shared an image of Prime Minister Modi on social media, praising the organizational prowess of the RSS-BJP.
The comments sparked an immediate reaction. General Secretary K.C. Venugopal responded by noting that even the party’s organizational efforts are failing to gain traction online, with members failing to even retweet official posts. Singh then doubled down, alleging the existence of active “sleeper cells” within the Congress that need to be identified.
While the CWC meeting was primarily intended to strategize against the proposed phasing out of the MGNREGA scheme, Singh’s focus on organizational restructuring and decentralization prompted some senior leaders to urge him to stick to the agenda. Even Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had to intervene, requesting to hear from other members.
Following the meeting, Singh attempted to clarify his stance, reiterating his opposition to the RSS ideology but acknowledging their organizational capabilities. He maintained that there is always room for improvement within the Congress, emphasizing that it should remain a party of movements.
The BJP seized on Singh’s statements, claiming they represent open dissent against Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi contrasted Modi’s rise from humble beginnings with the perceived decline of the Congress leadership.
The controversy highlights the internal challenges facing the Congress party, as it struggles to regain its footing and mount a credible challenge to the ruling BJP. The debate over organizational structure and potential internal sabotage threatens to further fracture the party at a critical juncture.
