Sat Dec 27 15:50:00 UTC 2025: Arizona Celebrates a Wet Christmas, Snow Potentially on the Horizon for the North
Phoenix, AZ – Forget visions of a white Christmas; Arizona residents awoke to a wet one this year as rain showers swept across the state, bringing a damp festive season to the Valley and reaching as far north as Flagstaff. While other parts of the country bundled up against snowdrifts, Arizonans experienced a uniquely drizzly holiday.
Rainfall totals were generally modest. “Most areas saw just a couple hundredths of an inch total,” said Mark O’Malley, meteorologist for the Phoenix National Weather Service. The heaviest rainfall in the Valley concentrated in northeast Maricopa County, including Fountain Hills and Apache Junction, with some areas reaching up to 0.10 inches.
Northern Arizona saw slightly higher totals, with Flagstaff receiving approximately 0.2 inches and the Grand Canyon recording 0.1 inches, according to Jacob Lewandowski, meteorologist for the Flagstaff National Weather Service. “Some localized spots even approached 1 inch of rain,” Lewandowski noted, “though most areas stayed around 0.1 inch.”
A slight chance of light showers remained for the Valley on Friday, December 26th, particularly in foothill areas, before a cooling trend begins Saturday, December 27th. Highs will be in the mid-to-upper 60s, with lows in the lower 40s, and drier, cooler air is expected to dominate the region through the weekend, according to O’Malley.
Up north, a slight chance of rain was also forecasted for Friday. However, a cold front is expected to move through the Flagstaff area on Saturday, potentially bringing accumulating snow by midday. The Weather Service predicts any snowfall will clear by late afternoon, with sunny skies returning by Monday, December 28th. So while Arizona traded snowmen for umbrellas this Christmas, a true white winter may still be on its way for the northern parts of the state.
