Thailand and Cambodia to Resume Truce Talks Amidst Escalating Border Clashes

BANGKOK – December 26, 2025 – As border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia enter their third week, Thailand’s Defence Minister is set to join ongoing talks on Saturday, December 27th, in a renewed effort to establish a truce. The announcement comes after the previous ceasefire, brokered with US President Donald Trump’s help in July and expanded in October, collapsed in early December.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the importance of both sides adhering to any agreement, stressing the need to “not threaten, offend, instigate, and to reduce hostility.” He expressed hope for a lasting peace that would allow displaced populations to return home.

Hostilities between the two Southeast Asian neighbors have resulted in at least 98 deaths and displaced over half a million people. Both nations have traded accusations regarding the breakdown of the previous truce. The 817-kilometer land border has been a long-standing source of contention.

Attempts by ASEAN, chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and the US have so far failed to halt the fighting. China’s special envoy for Asian affairs, Deng Xijun, has also recently held talks in Bangkok and Phnom Penh, urging both countries to de-escalate. The outcome of tomorrow’s talks remains uncertain, but the international community is hoping for a swift resolution to the conflict.
