Sat Dec 27 11:08:58 UTC 2025: Headline: Russian Strikes Rock Kyiv Ahead of Crucial Zelenskyy-Trump Meeting, Leaving Thousands Without Heat and Power

Kyiv, Ukraine – A barrage of Russian missile and drone strikes pummeled Kyiv early Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring dozens, just a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss a potential end to the nearly four-year war.

The attacks, which triggered a nearly 10-hour air raid alert, left a 47-year-old woman dead and at least 22 others injured, including two children, according to local authorities. The strikes also caused widespread disruption to essential services, leaving a third of the capital without heat and approximately 320,000 households in the broader Kyiv region without power as temperatures hovered around freezing.

President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting energy facilities and civilian infrastructure in an effort to inflict “greater suffering” on Ukraine. He asserted that the strikes demonstrated Russia’s lack of desire to end the conflict peacefully.

The timing of the attacks is particularly significant as Zelenskyy is set to meet with Trump in Florida on Sunday. Discussions are expected to center on security guarantees, the future of contested territories, and potential pathways towards a resolution to the conflict.

Prior to his U.S. visit, Zelenskyy will speak with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders. He will also stop in Canada to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
