UDF Sweeps Kozhikode District Panchayat Elections in Landmark Victory

Kozhikode, India – December 27, 2025 – The United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive victory in the Kozhikode district panchayat elections today. Milli Mohan of the UDF has been elected as the district panchayat president, with K.K. Navas also of the UDF, assuming the role of vice-president. The announcement was made earlier this evening following a series of closely contested votes and a draw of lots in several local governing bodies.

Ms. Mohan, representing Kodenchery, and Mr. Navas, from Nadapuram, each garnered 15 votes, surpassing their Left Democratic Front (LDF) rivals, P. Sharuthi and Anchitha Sanoop, who received 13 votes apiece.

The election results were not without drama, as the Vadakara block panchayat saw Kottayil Radhakrishnan of the UDF elected president after a suspected cross-vote from an LDF member. The vice-president post in Vadakara went to the LDF’s Preethi Mohan. The unusual vote is under scrutiny, with speculation pointing towards potential support from a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

Elsewhere, the UDF’s Mini Vattakkandi and Vaheeda Paremmal secured the president and vice-president positions, respectively, in the Perambra block panchayat. The Balussery block panchayat saw Ismail Kurumboyil (LDF) elected president and Fathima Shanavas (UDF) as vice-president.

At the grama panchayat level, the UDF claimed the top spots in Nanminda and Kottur, while the LDF secured victories in Thiruvallur and Moodadi. The vice-president positions were divided, with the LDF taking Nanminda, Kottur, and Moodadi, and the UDF winning in Thiruvallur. Controversy surrounds the Moodadi election, with the UDF challenging the validity of a vote cast for the LDF president.

In Thiruvambady grama panchayat, former Youth Congress leader Jithin Pallat, who ran independently against the UDF candidate, was elected president following a deal with district Congress leadership. Pallat will hold the position for three years before Bose Jacob of the Congress takes over.

These results mark a significant shift in the local political landscape and are expected to have far-reaching implications for development initiatives in the region.
