Thrissur, India – December 27, 2025 – The Left Democratic Front (LDF) solidified its political hold in Thrissur district today as Mary Thomas of the Vazhani division was elected President and T.K. Sudheesh of the Kattur division was elected Vice-President of the Thrissur district panchayat. Both LDF candidates secured decisive victories, each receiving 21 out of the 30 votes cast in their respective elections.
The presidential election, held earlier today, saw Ms. Thomas triumph over E.A. Omana, the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate from the Puthur division, who garnered nine votes. The oath of office was administered by District Collector Arjun Pandian.
The vice-presidential election followed in the afternoon, with Mr. Sudheesh defeating UDF candidate Shamseera Ashraf from the Vadakkekad division, also with a nine-vote count.
Revenue Minister K. Rajan and Social Justice Minister R. Bindu were present at the ceremony, along with other dignitaries.
The LDF’s strong performance in the panchayat elections underscores its continued political strength in the region. While the UDF managed to secure a crucial win in the Thrissur Corporation, the LDF remains the dominant force across the district. The LDF emerged ahead in five of the seven municipalities, and holds a lead in 10 of the 16 block panchayats. In the grama panchayats, the LDF leads in 44 of the 86 panchayats.
This latest victory is expected to further strengthen the LDF’s influence in Thrissur and enable the newly elected officials to implement their development agenda for the district.
