North Jersey, NJ – While a white Christmas remained elusive, North Jersey was blanketed by a significant snowstorm on Boxing Day, disrupting travel and prompting a state of emergency declaration. While not officially classified as a blizzard, the storm brought heavy snowfall across Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Essex, Morris, Sussex, and Warren counties.
The National Weather Service had forecasted 5 to 9 inches of snow for the region, and as of 9 p.m. Friday, Bergen County had already recorded 2.2 inches. The storm prompted a Winter Storm Warning across North Jersey.
New Jersey Governor declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon, urging residents to exercise caution. While the snowfall has tapered off to flurries early Saturday morning, roads, especially secondary ones, remain snow-covered and hazardous.
The storm continues to impact travel, with significant delays and cancellations reported at area airports. According to FlightAware, as of 5:53 a.m. Dec. 27, Newark Airport reported at least 28 delays and 105 cancellations, John F. Kennedy Airport in New York had at least 82 delays and 189 cancellations, and LaGuardia Airport had at least 11 delays and 102 cancellations.
The National Weather Service warned of continued travel impacts Saturday morning, urging caution for those who must drive. In a post on X, the NWS reminded residents to remain safe on the roads.
Dr. Barry Franklin, a retired American Heart Association expert, reminded residents about the strain shoveling snow can put on your heart.
