NEW YORK – Millions of Americans embarking on holiday travel are facing a chaotic start to their journeys, with widespread flight delays and cancellations plaguing airports across the country. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented multiple airspace flow restrictions (AFPs) in an effort to manage the surge of travelers, potentially adding hours to already lengthy travel times.

“That’s leading to record numbers on the roads and in the skies” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA.

According to reports, some delays could stretch beyond six hours as the FAA limits the number of planes taking off and entering congested airspace. Winter weather conditions are further exacerbating the situation.

As of Friday afternoon, flight-tracking site FlightAware reported over 5,500 U.S. flights delayed and more than 1,400 canceled. Airports in the New York area are particularly hard-hit, with John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport experiencing a significant percentage of canceled outbound flights.
