CHENNAI, December 27, 2025 – In an effort to mitigate conflict between dog lovers and residents uncomfortable with stray animals, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has established designated feeding zones for stray dogs across the city. This move comes in response to a recent Supreme Court directive mandating that stray dogs be fed only in specified areas, with civic bodies responsible for creating these feeding areas within municipal wards.
A senior GCC official stated that the corporation aims to regulate the movement of stray dogs and minimize public inconvenience by identifying and setting up these feeding centers. Currently, eight locations have been demarcated in areas including Thiruvottiyur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Perungudi, Palavakkam and Ambattur, following consultations with residents’ welfare associations, the police, and other stakeholders. The GCC plans to expand the initiative to include two designated feeding areas in each zone within the next week.
While some animal lovers applaud the initiative, concerns have been raised. Pavithra Rajasekaran, an animal advocate, suggested area-specific feeding spots could lead to intensified territorial behavior and aggression among dogs.
G. Arun Prasanna, founder of People for Cattle in India, urged the GCC to equip the designated spots with necessary amenities like shade, water, waste disposal bins, and clear bilingual signage prohibiting feeding outside these areas. He further emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns through the GCC website, ward-level WhatsApp groups, notice boards, and local media to educate residents about the new protocol and legal compliance.
