Taipei, Taiwan – A strong earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan late on Wednesday, sending tremors across the island and being felt as far away as Japan’s Okinawa region.
The quake, which occurred around 11:06 PM local time on Wednesday (27th), was reported by Japan’s weather information website tenki.jp. The epicenter was located at approximately 24.7 degrees North latitude and 122.1 degrees East longitude, in the waters east of Taiwan.
Japanese media outlets, operating on a one-hour time difference, reported the earthquake as having occurred around 12:06 AM on Thursday (28th).
The Japan Meteorological Agency estimates the earthquake to have reached a magnitude of 6.7. Residents in Okinawa, particularly on Ishigaki Island, reported feeling the tremors.
While details are still emerging, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties in Taiwan. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
