Detroit Seniors to Receive Christmas Meals Thanks to Volunteers and DTE Energy Foundation

DETROIT – Christmas morning will be a little brighter for approximately 5,500 homebound seniors and adults with disabilities in the Detroit area, thanks to the efforts of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), the DTE Energy Foundation, and hundreds of volunteers.

The annual Christmas Holiday Meals on Wheels event, now in its 37th year, will see DTE Energy employees gathering at Trio Community Meals early Christmas morning to pack nutritious meals, including airline chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and dessert. These meals will then be delivered by some 300 community volunteers to seniors and other vulnerable adults in Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park, and the five Grosse Pointes.

“For a lot of older adults, Christmas morning can be really quiet and lonely,” said Ronald Taylor, President and CEO of DAAA. “These meals aren’t just about food, they’re about letting our seniors know they’re seen, they matter, and they’re not alone.”

The DTE Energy Foundation, which has supported the event for the past 16 years, contributed $43,000 to this year’s initiative. DTE Senior Vice President Angie Pizzuti emphasized the company’s commitment to giving back to the community. “Volunteering alongside my family every Christmas is one of our most cherished traditions,” Pizzuti said. “At DTE, we don’t just power Southeast Michigan, our employees across the company are dedicated to giving back to the communities we serve and call home.”

The DAAA, a senior services nonprofit, organizes the event each year to ensure that vulnerable community members feel cared for during the holiday season. The Christmas Holiday Meals on Wheels program is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of supporting seniors in need.
