Christmas Spirit Illuminates Southern Tamil Nadu
NAGERCOIL, TIRUNELVELI, December 26, 2025 – Christmas celebrations swept across the southern Tamil Nadu districts of Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi yesterday, December 25, 2025, with churches overflowing for special midnight masses. Coastal villages buzzed with festive decorations, elaborate cribs, dazzling lights, and lively musical events.
In Kanniyakumari, thousands of devotees attended midnight masses at Catholic churches, including St. Xavier’s Cathedral in Kottar led by Rev. Nazarene Soosai. Churches across the district, like CSI Home Church in Nagercoil and CSI District Church Marthandam, were illuminated with vibrant colors, drawing visitors eager to admire the decorations.
Thoothukudi witnessed large gatherings at Sacred Hearts Cathedral, where Rev. Stephen Antony conducted a special mass. A grand midnight mass also took place at Our Lady of Snows Basilica. Churches throughout the district were adorned with Christmas lights, extending to homes, businesses, and even fishing boats.
In Tirunelveli, St. Xavier’s Cathedral in Palayamkottai was the site of a significant midnight mass. To ensure public safety, over 800 police personnel were deployed across the district.
Tenkasi echoed the festive mood, with hundreds attending midnight masses and Christmas prayers. Celebrations were similarly observed in churches throughout Tamil Nadu.
