Mumbai, December 26, 2025 – Akhil Sathyan’s sophomore film, “Sarvam Maya,” a lighthearted ghost story starring Nivin Pauly, has hit theaters, garnering mixed reviews but highlighting Pauly’s rediscovered comedic talent. The film, reviewed by The Hindu’s “First Day First Show” section today, centers on Prabhendu (Pauly), a struggling guitarist who temporarily joins his family’s priestly profession. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a friendly, albeit clueless, ghost during a puja.
The review notes that the film initially appears progressive, gently satirizing the commercialization of rituals and the irrationality behind them. However, it shifts focus to converting an atheist into a believer, aided by the preachy ghost. While the plot is described as “thin and sometimes shallow,” the performances, particularly Pauly and Riya Shibu, elevate the material. Shibu, in her second film role, brings fresh energy to the screen.
According to the review, “Sarvam Maya” provides Pauly with a platform to rediscover his comedic timing and charm. The film utilizes the actor’s established on-screen chemistry with Aju Varghese in early scenes, before pivoting to Shibu. While some emotional elements added towards the end feel rushed, the film is ultimately praised for showcasing Pauly’s ability to elicit laughter with subtle gestures and impeccable timing. Despite its flaws, “Sarvam Maya” might be remembered for giving Nivin the space to rediscover his mojo after so long.
