Drone Strikes Ignite Fuel Market in RSF-Held Nyala, Sudan

Nyala, Sudan – A fuel market in Nyala, South Darfur, the administrative capital of the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) self-declared government, was struck by military drones this week, according to the RSF. The RSF accuses the Sudanese army of deliberately targeting civilians in the attack, which ignited a large fire and sent plumes of black smoke into the air.

The strikes, part of a three-day aerial campaign, also targeted strategic RSF locations, including the Nyala International Airport, military positions, and training facilities. No official statement has been released by the Sudanese military.

The RSF claims the strikes were a deliberate attempt to punish Darfur residents for not resisting the RSF’s presence. Casualties were reported among civilians and RSF members involved in the fuel trade. In response, the RSF intelligence services have reportedly conducted mass arrests, accusing civilians and military personnel of providing coordinates to the army.

Nyala holds strategic importance as the center of the RSF’s parallel government, known as TASIS, a move that has been widely condemned. The city has been targeted previously by the army, with the airport reportedly being used as a logistics hub by the RSF.

The fighting in Darfur has intensified since the RSF captured El Fasher in October, a campaign marked by documented atrocities. The United States has accused the RSF of committing genocide in Darfur.

The attack comes as Sudan’s Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, presented a peace proposal to the UN Security Council, calling for RSF withdrawal, disarmament, and eventual elections. The RSF rejected the plan.

Sudan’s de facto leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was in Turkey for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who expressed support for peace efforts. Meanwhile, a senior Sudanese official ruled out negotiations with the RSF.

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in over 100,000 deaths and displaced nearly 14 million people, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. With the RSF seizing El Fasher, the conflict has expanded to Central Kordofan, further dividing Sudan.
