Lily Allen Reflects on Past Mistakes, Hints at Future Marriage Ambivalence After David Harbour Split
London, UK – Pop star Lily Allen has revealed a new understanding of the pain she may have caused in her first marriage to ex-husband Sam Cooper, following her recent split from “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour. In an interview with the Observer UK, published Saturday, December 20th, Allen, 40, opened up about the lessons she’s learned.
“Having done things that were not very nice in my first marriage, I have a better idea now of the pain I may have inflicted,” Allen stated, adding, “I’ve learned how horrible it is to be on the receiving end of that.”
Allen and Harbour, 50, separated earlier this year after four years of marriage. Her upcoming album, “West End Girl,” is said to be heavily influenced by the breakdown of their relationship and her experiences in a new city. According to a previous press release, the album blends personal experiences with fictional narratives, exploring the complexities of human behavior.
When asked about the possibility of marrying again, Allen expressed mixed feelings. “I’d like to say I’d never do it again, but I do like it. Everything but the institution of it, you know?” she admitted. She confessed her enjoyment of the romantic aspects of marriage – “I like being chosen. I like jewelry. I like getting dressed up. I like celebrating”– but disliked the financial and legal aspects, stating, “I don’t like talking about money. I like my independence. But I don’t like divorce.”
Allen was previously married to Sam Cooper from 2011 to 2018, and they share custody of their two daughters, Marnie, 12, and Ethel, 14. She has previously discussed their amicable co-parenting arrangement, noting how it allows her to focus on her work when her children are with their father. That divorce, along with motherhood, inspired her 2018 album, “No Shame.”
