Jimmy Kimmel Delivers Scathing Christmas Message on UK TV, Blasts Trump
LONDON – In a year marked by controversy and a brief suspension from his own show, Jimmy Kimmel took his platform to British television on Thursday, delivering Channel 4’s annual “alternative Christmas message” with a sharp critique of President Donald Trump and a plea for international support.
Kimmel, whose ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was briefly pulled off the air in September after he made controversial comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, didn’t hold back. He joked about his familiarity with the UK and quipped, “from a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year. Tyranny is booming over here.”
The suspension of Kimmel’s show, sparked by FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr’s concerns about broadcast license reviews, became a major flashpoint in the debate over freedom of speech. Disney, ABC’s parent company, quickly reversed course, reinstating the show within a week.
“My country’s president would like to shut me up because I don’t adore him in the way he likes to be adored,” Kimmel said in his Christmas message, referencing the suspension. “We won, the president lost, and now I’m back on the air every night.”
Kimmel didn’t mince words about the state of the US, describing it as “a right mess” and saying, “We are both figuratively and literally tearing down the structures of our democracy.” He urged British viewers not to give up on the US, promising that Americans would turn things around and requesting, “Give us about three years, please.”
Channel 4 described Trump’s return to the White House as “the story of 2025” and stated that Kimmel, having been “on the frontline of America’s battle over free speech,” was uniquely positioned to address it.
Kimmel recently extended his contract with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” through May 2027.
