Israel Recognizes Somaliland, Marking Diplomatic Breakthrough for Breakaway Region

Jerusalem/Hargeisa – In a historic move, Israel has become the first nation to formally recognize Somaliland, the breakaway region of Somalia that declared independence in 1991. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the agreement Friday, calling it a “joint declaration establishing full diplomatic relations” and comparing it to the Abraham Accords.

This marks a significant diplomatic victory for Somaliland, which has sought international recognition for over three decades without success. The agreement includes plans for establishing embassies and appointing ambassadors in both countries, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, also known as Abdirahman Cirro, welcomed the recognition as a “historic moment” and expressed his country’s readiness to join the Abraham Accords.

Somalia’s government has reacted strongly, calling for an urgent cabinet meeting and engaging in diplomatic efforts with Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti to reaffirm support for Somalia’s unity. Somalia has never recognized Somaliland’s independence.

The move comes amid a history of Somaliland seeking international acceptance, having previously developed ties with the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan. Speculation had circulated previously regarding potential recognition from the United States under the Trump administration.

Experts remain divided on whether Israel’s recognition will lead other nations to follow suit. Some suggest it could embolden other regions within Somalia seeking greater autonomy, highlighting existing tensions and the country’s fragmented political landscape.

The US has not yet changed it’s position on the issue.
