Historic Goschen Library in Chennai Reopens After Extensive Renovations

Chennai, India – December 26, 2025 – After a year-long renovation, the nearly century-old Goschen Library in Chintadripet, Chennai, is set to reopen to the public in early January 2026. The restoration project, undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) at a cost of ₹2.36 crore, has transformed the dilapidated structure into a vibrant community hub.

Originally built in 1926 by P. Vijiaragavulu Chetty and later named after Viscount Goschen, the then Governor of Madras, the library has been meticulously restored to its classical architectural style. The 2,636 sq. ft. space now features a Madras terrace roof, strengthened walls, and freshly plastered interiors.

The revitalized library boasts a collection of over 18,000 books, dedicated reading areas, computer access, and refurbished facilities. Recognizing the needs of the community, designated spaces have also been created for students preparing for competitive exams, group discussions, and interactive sessions. Future plans include a children’s section and a dedicated space for women readers. The library’s expansive front yard will be transformed into a reader-friendly outdoor space with benches and chairs.

“Such libraries, which are local initiatives, shed light on efforts taken by Indians to support shared spaces for intellectual engagement,” said Ashmitha Athreya, trustee, Madras Inherited.

Librarian-in-Charge, C.A. Mohanarangam, noted the increasing patronage and anticipates even greater readership following the renovations. Pi. Janaarthanan, secretary of the Madras Library Association, emphasized the crucial role libraries play in keeping the public informed.

The Goschen Library’s reopening marks a significant step towards preserving Chennai’s historical landmarks and promoting community engagement through accessible resources and intellectual enrichment.
