China Sanctions U.S. Defense Firms Over Taiwan Arms Deal
Beijing, China – December 26, 2025 – China announced sanctions on 20 U.S. defense firms and 10 senior executives today in response to the Trump administration’s approval of a massive $11.1 billion arms sales package to Taiwan. The Foreign Ministry issued a stern warning, stating that any provocation regarding Taiwan would be met with a “firm response.”
The ministry’s statement accused the U.S. of undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and sending the wrong signals to pro-independence forces in Taiwan. It urged the U.S. to adhere to the “one-China principle” and cease arming the island.
While the sanctions are largely considered symbolic due to limited business operations of the targeted firms in China, the move underscores Beijing’s sensitivity surrounding the Taiwan issue. China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has repeatedly warned against any external interference in its reunification efforts.
The proposed arms sales to Taiwan, which still require approval from the U.S. Congress, come amid increasing tensions and concerns in Taipei over potential Chinese military action. The scale of the package is expected to reassure China hawks within the U.S. government, some of whom have questioned President Trump’s commitment to defending Taiwan amidst ongoing trade negotiations with Beijing.
