Thu Dec 25 17:48:22 UTC 2025: Bolsonaro Undergoes Successful Hernia Surgery, Son Announces Presidential Bid Endorsement
Brasilia – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup, underwent a successful surgery Thursday to address a painful double inguinal hernia. The procedure took place at the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, with doctors anticipating a five to seven-day hospitalization for the 70-year-old.
“Successful surgery completed, without complications. Now we wait for him to wake up from anaesthesia,” his wife Michelle Bolsonaro posted on Instagram. Bolsonaro was granted temporary release from prison to undergo the procedure. He has undergone several surgeries since a 2018 stabbing incident during a campaign rally.
Doctors also plan to evaluate Bolsonaro’s eligibility for a procedure to address recurrent hiccups.
Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, Bolsonaro’s eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, announced on Thursday that his father had formally endorsed his bid for the Liberal Party’s presidential nomination in next year’s election. Flavio read aloud a handwritten letter from his father, dated Thursday, stating his support and calling him the “continuation of the path of prosperity.”
Jair Bolsonaro was convicted in September for attempting to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office and retain power. He maintains his innocence, claiming political persecution.
