Hurricanes Stumble to Victory Over Scorchers, David Injury a Worry
Hobart, Australia – The Hobart Hurricanes narrowly defeated the Perth Scorchers by four wickets in a tense Big Bash League encounter, but the victory was overshadowed by a potentially serious hamstring injury to star batsman Tim David.
Chasing 151 for victory, the Hurricanes faltered early, slumping to 39-3. David injected much-needed momentum with a blistering 42 off 28 balls, forming a crucial 63-run partnership with Nikhil Chaudhary (34). However, his innings was cut short when he retired hurt with an apparent hamstring issue. The injury has implications not just for the Hurricanes’ title defence, but also for Australia’s T20 World Cup plans in February.
Needing 48 runs from 33 balls after David’s departure, the Hurricanes lost Rehan Ahmed cheaply. The equation then came down to 31 from the final three overs. Macalister Wright (22 not out) and Chris Jordan (15) edged the Hurricanes closer before Jordan fell with just two runs required. Captain Nathan Ellis then stepped up, hitting his first ball for four to seal a hard-fought victory.
Earlier, the Scorchers posted 150-8, with Finn Allen top-scoring with 43 off 23 balls. Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossain was the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers, claiming 3-33.
The win sees the Hurricanes join the Melbourne Stars at the top of the BBL standings on six points, while the Scorchers remain in fourth place after their second consecutive defeat.
