Asfura Declares Victory in Honduran Presidential Election Amidst Controversy
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate backed by former US President Donald Trump, has claimed victory in Honduras’s tightly contested presidential election. The announcement by the country’s election council (CNE) on Wednesday, more than three weeks after the vote, is likely to face challenges and deepen political divisions.
According to the CNE, Asfura of the National Party secured 40.3% of the vote, narrowly defeating Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla, who garnered 39.5%. Asfura promptly took to social media, thanking the CNE and declaring, “Honduras: I am prepared to govern. I will not fail you.”
The United States has urged all parties to respect the confirmed results, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulating Asfura and stating that Washington looks forward to working with him.
The election has drawn international attention due to the involvement of Donald Trump, who strongly supported Asfura. The results have been hailed by other right-wing leaders in the Americas, including Argentinian President Javier Milei, who sees it as a victory against “narcosocialism.” Notably, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, also of the National Party, was recently pardoned by Trump after being convicted of drug trafficking in the US.
The election result signifies a potential shift in Latin America, reversing the recent “Pink Tide” of left-leaning governments. Conservative candidates have recently won elections in Chile, Bolivia, and El Salvador, marking a resurgence of right-wing influence in the region amidst ongoing US pressure against Venezuela’s left-wing President Nicolas Maduro.
