Madurai Launches Women-Driven E-Auto Program for Safer Tourism

The initiative, spearheaded by Cholan Tours and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, provides women with electric auto-rickshaws and comprehensive training to become professional drivers catering to tourists and residents alike.

“This program not only provides women with a dignified livelihood but also ensures safer travel for women, senior citizens, and tourists visiting our city,” said Venkatesan Dhattatreyan, Regional Director of the Union Ministry of Tourism, during the launch. He emphasized Madurai’s rich heritage and the potential for women to thrive in the tourism sector with enhanced skills in road safety, soft skills, basic tourism knowledge, and professional conduct.

Cholan Tours founder Pandian Kumaravel, highlighted the program’s goal of creating a more meaningful and secure travel experience within Madurai. The initial cohort of 13 women drivers have undergone specialized training from various departments to provide a confident and reliable transportation option.

“We are aware of the challenges ahead, but we hope to ensure a joyful ride, especially to domestic and international tourists visiting Madurai,” said one of the newly trained e-auto drivers.
