Thu Dec 25 14:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Yakutia Freezes: Extreme Cold Grips World’s Coldest Inhabited Region

Yakutsk, Russia – Residents of Yakutia, a region in Russia’s far east known as the coldest inhabited area on Earth, are battling a severe cold snap, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -56°C in remote areas. In Yakutsk, the region’s capital and the world’s coldest major city, the mercury has dipped to between -45°C and -50°C, impacting the lives of its 355,000 residents.

Heavy snowfall and icy winds have further compounded the situation, forcing locals to limit outdoor activities to just 30 minutes to avoid the risk of frostbite. Despite the extreme conditions, Yakutians have adapted to the harsh winters with measures like triple-glazed windows, block heaters for cars, and extensive use of fur-lined clothing, allowing them to navigate daily life amidst ice fog and blizzards.

In response to the extreme weather, authorities have taken precautionary measures, including closing schools throughout the region. In the town of Tiksi, heavy snowdrifts have trapped residents indoors, leading to the closure of kindergartens.

Meteorologists are forecasting further drops in temperature in the coming days, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities are also emphasizing the importance of ensuring adequate heating to prevent cold-related illnesses.
