Delhi Breathes Easier, Briefly, as Air Quality Improves

New Delhi – December 25, 2025 – Delhi residents awoke to a marginal improvement in air quality this morning, December 25th, after experiencing “severe” pollution levels earlier in the week. The city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 220, placing it in the “poor” category, a significant improvement from the “severe” level of 412 seen on Tuesday.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) Sameer app, most of the capital’s monitoring stations reported “poor” air quality. However, Anand Vihar continues to struggle, registering an AQI of 308, classified as “very poor.”

Experts at the CPCB attribute the temporary improvement to favorable meteorological conditions, particularly surface wind speeds of 15 to 25 kilometers per hour.

“We’ve seen a welcome, albeit temporary, shift in air quality due to increased wind speeds,” said a CPCB spokesperson. “However, forecasts indicate a likely return to more polluted conditions in the coming days.”

The respite comes as Delhi experiences typical winter weather, with a minimum temperature of 6.5° Celsius, slightly below the seasonal average. The India Meteorological Department predicts moderate fog and a maximum temperature of 22° Celsius.

While today’s cleaner air offers a brief moment of relief, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as pollution levels are expected to rise again.
