Sydney, Australia – December 25, 2025 – Christmas celebrations at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach were subdued this year, following a devastating terror attack that claimed the lives of 15 people on December 14th. Despite the tragedy, hundreds of people, many sporting Santa hats, gathered on the sands, demonstrating resilience in the face of grief.
“I think it’s tragic… but everybody has got it in their memories and everybody is respectful of what happened,” said British tourist Mark Conroy, reflecting the somber yet determined atmosphere.
The attack, which targeted a Jewish Hannukah celebration, has spurred calls for stricter gun control and intensified efforts to combat antisemitism. New laws tightening public gathering rules were passed on Wednesday in Sydney.
Police maintained a visible presence on the beachfront as beachgoers took photos by a Christmas tree and interacted with lifeguards. Windy conditions contributed to thinner crowds, with Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain Thomas Hough noting they were “not the best conditions for Christmas Day.” Flags flew at half-mast outside the Bondi Pavilion as a mark of respect.
In a separate incident, a car displaying a “Happy Chanukah!” sign was firebombed in Melbourne. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the act, calling it “just beyond comprehension” and criticizing what he described as a surge of antisemitism in the country since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023.
