George Strait to be Honored at Kennedy Center Honors
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Country music icon George Strait, with over 120 million albums sold worldwide, will be recognized as a 2025 Kennedy Center Honoree. The ceremony will air on CBS on December 23rd, from 8pm to 10:30pm ET.
Born and raised in Texas, Strait’s journey began balancing ranch work with his passion for music. Following his service in the U.S. Army, where he performed in a country band, he earned a degree in agriculture and played honky tonks, eventually leading to a record deal with MCA Records in 1981.
Strait rose to prominence in the 1980s as a leading figure in the neotraditional country movement, delivering hit after hit that became standards in the genre, like “Amarillo by Morning” and “All My Ex’s Live in Texas”. His success continued through the 1990s and 2000s, including a starring role in the film “Pure Country” and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
Despite announcing a “farewell tour” in 2012, Strait has remained active, recently releasing his 2024 album “Cowboys and Dreamers.” Beyond his musical achievements, Strait is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly supporting veterans and Texas-based charities. In 2025, he organized a major relief concert that raised millions for communities impacted by floods in Central Texas.
The Kennedy Center Honors celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Strait’s selection as a honoree recognizes his remarkable career and enduring impact on country music and beyond.
