Tue Dec 23 20:13:57 UTC 2025: Nigeria Edges Past Tanzania in AFCON Opener

Fez, Morocco – Nigeria secured a narrow 2-1 victory against Tanzania in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, played in Fez, Morocco. Ademola Lookman’s decisive goal spared the Super Eagles’ blushes after a wasteful performance in front of goal.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring for Nigeria in the first half, giving the three-time champions the lead after sustained pressure. However, Tanzania responded shortly after halftime through Charles M’Mombwa, leveling the score and injecting life into the match.

Nigeria’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, endured a frustrating evening, failing to convert several opportunities. Despite his efforts, he could have had a hat-trick on another day.

Atalanta forward Lookman then stepped up to restore Nigeria’s lead with a well-taken shot from outside the box. The Super Eagles were unable to add to their lead, despite creating further opportunities.

Tanzania, seeking their first-ever AFCON win, proved to be a resilient opponent, threatening occasionally and testing the Nigerian defense. Goalkeeper Zuberi Masudi was forced off injured after a brave challenge.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle will be hoping for an improved performance in their next Group C match against Tunisia on Saturday. Tanzania will face Uganda on the same day.
