Wed Dec 24 15:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Michigan Wolverines Coaching Search Heats Up as Christmas Deadline Looms
Ann Arbor, MI – December 23, 2025 – The University of Michigan’s search for a new head football coach is intensifying as Christmas Eve approaches, with the program still reeling from the recent firing of Sherrone Moore. Sources close to the program tell FootballScoop that university leaders are aiming to name a replacement by Christmas, but the process remains uncertain.
Interim coach Biff Poggi is considered a long shot for the permanent position. The latest contender to emerge is Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm. Sources indicate that Michigan officials have begun vetting Brohm and gauging his interest in the job. Brohm, who also coaches at his alma mater, has had impressive performances at Louisville, securing 27 wins over the past three seasons, and previously led Purdue to 17 wins in his final two seasons.
Brohm has been a sought-after coach this cycle, with both Florida and Penn State expressing interest before hiring Jon Sumrall and Matt Campbell, respectively. While Louisville has initiated contract extension talks, Brohm has yet to sign.
Former national championship-winning defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, currently the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, has reportedly withdrawn himself from consideration. NFL sources indicate that Minter is focusing on a potential NFL head coaching opportunity in the future.
Biff Poggi is not giving up. He has been working on a potential staff to present to the University.
Outgoing Utah coach Kyle Whittingham remains a popular candidate within the Michigan program. Known for his integrity and experience, Whittingham is seen as a stabilizing force. He is set to coach his final game for Utah on December 31st against Nebraska.
The urgency to fill the coaching vacancy is growing, especially with the NCAA transfer portal opening on January 2 and the window for players to enter the portal following a coaching change also approaching. Without a coach in place, players are unable to negotiate deals for the next year.
