Wed Dec 24 06:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Ubisoft Pioneers VRR Tech on Nintendo Switch 2, Teases Future Enhancements
Valletta, Malta – Ubisoft is cementing its position as a leading AAA supporter of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, not only by porting major titles like “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” and “Star Wars Outlaws,” but also by actively collaborating with Nintendo to enhance the handheld’s core technology.
Developers working on the “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” port revealed to FRVR that Ubisoft is working closely with Nintendo to improve Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support on the Switch 2, benefiting all games on the system.
The port of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” employs an ingenious workaround to leverage VRR even below the standard 40Hz threshold. The development team created a dedicated algorithm that maintains VRR at 30fps, ensuring a fluid and responsive gameplay experience. “The same frame is effectively presented twice,” the developers explained, “once in the middle of the frame and again at the end, so the hardware outputs at a 60Hz interval while maintaining smooth visuals.”
Ubisoft confirmed this technology is now integrated into their Anvil Engine and will be implemented in future titles. While they remained tight-lipped about potential ports of older Assassin’s Creed games, including the rumored “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Resynced” remake, the presence of more Anvil Engine-powered titles on the Switch 2 seems likely.
More excitingly, Ubisoft is actively collaborating with Nintendo to further refine VRR support. This suggests the innovative algorithm used in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” and “Star Wars: Outlaws” could become more widely adopted as the system’s software continues to evolve.
Beyond VRR, the team working on “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” also praised the Switch 2’s Nvidia DLSS technology. They noted that DLSS offered superior upscaling compared to Ubisoft’s internal “Anvil TAAU,” even when upscaling from lower resolutions, while acknowledging potential for further improvements.
Overall, it appears the Nintendo Switch 2 has more capabilities and tricks to show, and talented developers are working diligently to use them. The future is bright for the Nintendo Switch 2, and Ubisoft is helping the way.
