Stars Dominate Maple Leafs 5-1, Robertson Breaks Scoring Drought Against Toronto

DALLAS, TX – The Dallas Stars delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night, extending their winning streak to four games. The win was highlighted by Jason Robertson’s first-ever goal against the Maple Leafs in his tenth career game against them, marking the final team he had yet to score on. Goaltender Jake Oettinger was stellar in net, stopping 27 shots and earning his 16th win of the season, tying him for the most in the NHL. He even notched his first assist of the season on Mavrik Bourque’s late empty-netter.

Robertson opened the scoring late in the first period, burying his 23rd goal of the season, which is tied for third in the league. Sam Steel’s early third-period goal proved to be the game-winner for Dallas. Jamie Benn and Justin Hryckowian also contributed to the Stars’ offensive outburst.

While Scott Laughton managed to score for the Maple Leafs, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Stars’ dominant performance. Goalie Dennis Hildeby, who played in place of Joseph Woll, stopped 16 shots, but the Leafs head home winless after a disappointing 0-3-0 road trip.

Oettinger played a crucial role, especially during key moments in the game. He denied Auston Matthews on a breakaway chance in the first period and made several critical saves late in the second, stymieing a flurry of Toronto scoring attempts.

The victory marked Dallas’s first home win against Toronto since January 31, 2017, ending a long 0-6-1 losing streak. Adding to the significance, it was also Robertson’s first win in six games against his younger brother, Nick, who plays for the Maple Leafs.

Toronto’s struggles continued on the power play, going 0 for 4 and highlighting their league-worst 13.3% success rate.

Looking Ahead:

The Maple Leafs return home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. The Stars, boasting an NHL-best 13-2-4 road record, will travel to Detroit to take on the Red Wings on Tuesday.
