Tue Dec 23 20:24:32 UTC 2025: NDA Secures Victory in Bihar Assembly Elections, Triggering Political Debate

Patna, December 24, 2025 – The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has secured a significant victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, consolidating its power in the Hindi heartland. The election outcome, however, has sparked controversy due to a massive voter roll revision and concerns surrounding the Chief Minister’s health.

Incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of Janata Dal (United) was sworn in for an unprecedented tenth term, despite facing anti-incumbency sentiments. The NDA secured 202 of the 243 seats, while the opposition Mahagathbandhan was limited to 35. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, closely followed by JD(U) with 85.

Prior to the election, the Election Commission of India (EC) conducted a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, resulting in the removal of 6.5 million names. While the EC claims these were due to death, relocation, or duplicate registration, the opposition alleges widespread disenfranchisement.

The Bihar government also launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, providing ₹10,000 to 7.5 million women as seed money for self-employment. This initiative, touted as a key factor in the JD(U)’s success, along with promises of development and welfare, including higher pensions and job reservations for women, formed the core of the NDA’s campaign.

The new government has announced ambitious development projects, including the Patna metro, new airports, and improvements to healthcare and education infrastructure.

In other news, Nitin Nabin, a five-term MLA, has been appointed as the BJP’s new national working president, replacing Jagat Prakash Nadda. Additionally, Arif Mohammed Khan replaced Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as the Governor of Bihar earlier this year.

Authorities report that Left-Wing Extremism in Bihar has been virtually eradicated due to successful anti-Maoist operations. However, political analysts predict heightened political activity in 2026, citing concerns over Chief Minister Kumar’s health and the rise of Nitin Nabin in the BJP.
