Kolkata Sees Unrest as BJP Protest Over Bangladesh Killing Turns Violent

Kolkata, India – December 24, 2025 – Clashes erupted in Kolkata today as police attempted to halt a protest organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alleged killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh. The incident occurred near Howrah Bridge as BJP supporters marched in protest.

The demonstration was sparked by the death of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment worker who was reportedly lynched and his body set ablaze in Baluka, Mymensingh, Bangladesh on December 18th. The incident was allegedly related to blasphemy allegations.

Police intervened before the protesters could reach Howrah Bridge, resulting in heated arguments and scuffles. Demonstrators sat on the road and attempted to breach barricades, according to authorities. Police stated that the protesters turned aggressive, prompting them to disperse the crowd.

A senior Howrah Police officer told PTI, “We will not let anyone hamper normal life and cause trouble to commuters in the name of protest. We will act in accordance with the law to thwart any attempts to create trouble.”

This incident follows similar unrest yesterday, when a march towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Park Circus was also halted by police, resulting in injuries after police used batons to disperse the crowd. That protest was also in response to alleged attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
