Christmas Carol Attack Sparks Protests in Palakkad

Palakkad, Kerala – December 24, 2025 – Outrage has erupted in Palakkad following an alleged attack on a children’s Christmas carol on Sunday night. According to reports, Aswin Raj, identified as an RSS-BJP worker, attacked the carolers in Kalandithara, Pudussery, reportedly assaulting the children and damaging their musical instruments. Raj has been arrested by police following a complaint.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from various groups. The DYFI has announced a series of protest carols across the district, challenging the RSS and BJP to interfere.

The BJP’s State Vice-President, C. Krishnakumar, defended Raj’s actions, claiming the carol was politically motivated by the CPI(M) and that the participants were intoxicated and deliberately attempting to cause trouble. These remarks have been met with sharp criticism, with the DYFI accusing Krishnakumar of exposing a “communal face.”

Religious leaders, including Palakkad Bishop Mar Peter Kochupurackal, have also condemned the attack, calling for the matter to be handled legally.

The Congress party has described the incident as an attack on communal harmony and blamed the BJP’s actions on their failure to garner support from the Christian community in recent elections. They demanded those responsible be brought to justice.

Police confirmed that Raj faces charges under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) and has been booked under additional sections relating to causing hurt and promoting communal violence. The investigation is ongoing.
