Tribal Road in Jawadhu Hills to be Widened, Boosting Connectivity and Economic Opportunity
Tiruvannamalai, December 23, 2025 – A vital road project aimed at improving connectivity and boosting the economic prospects of tribal communities residing in the Jawadhu Hills of Tiruvannamalai district officially commenced today. Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu laid the foundation stone for the widening of the road stretching between Jamunamarathur and Chengam, a route that winds through the region’s reserve forests.
Currently a single-lane pathway primarily used by tribal residents and forest officials, the road will be expanded to a two-lane stretch measuring 5.5 meters wide. The project, funded under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP 2025-26) with a budget of ₹ 12 crore, will cover a distance of 38.5 kilometers between Keel Paramanandal village and Athipattu.
“The widening of this narrow stretch will significantly improve the safety and accessibility for tribal residents traveling to areas in the plains,” stated K. Manohar, Assistant Executive Engineer, State Highways (Chengam). “It will also facilitate the transport of agricultural produce to local markets, fostering economic growth within the communities.”
The upgraded road will feature paved shoulders for enhanced durability and safety, along with essential signages, reflectors, and road markings. To minimize disruption to the local wildlife, blinkers and LED streetlights will be avoided. The project also includes the construction of 158 culverts and one minor bridge to manage rainwater runoff and prevent waterlogging. To protect motorists, a retaining wall will be built at eight hairpin bends.
Once completed in 2026, the widened road will enable regular bus services and improved access for emergency vehicles like ambulances, providing permanent road connectivity to larger towns in the plains. Local resident V. Mayandi welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the improved access to big towns and medical services.
