Russia Urges Bangladesh to De-escalate Tensions with India Amidst Domestic Unrest

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Amidst ongoing domestic turmoil and strained relations between Bangladesh and India, Russia has called on Bangladesh to ease tensions with its South Asian neighbor. Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin emphasized the importance of stable relations between the two nations for regional stability, citing India’s crucial role in Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

Khozin cautioned against further escalation, as Bangladesh faces mob violence, protests, and political uncertainty ahead of the February 12 national elections. He stated that while Russia isn’t interfering in bilateral relations, Moscow believes de-escalation is crucial.

The call comes amidst a fresh wave of unrest in Bangladesh following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in anti-government protests. Protesters have directed anger towards India, with attempts to storm the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong leading to the suspension of Indian visa services. Some factions accuse the government of being subservient to India.

Additionally, a Hindu man was killed in Mymensingh, and leading newspapers, Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were targeted by angry mobs, allegedly due to perceived links with India.

India has already summoned the Bangladeshi envoy, expressing strong concern over rising extremism and the deteriorating security around the Indian mission in Dhaka. The situation underscores the fragile state of relations between the two countries amidst Bangladesh’s internal challenges.
