Singaporean Man Charged with False Terrorist Threat at Church
SINGAPORE – December 22, 2025 – Kokulananthan Mohan, a 26-year-old Singaporean man of Indian origin, was charged in Singapore on Monday with making a false terrorist threat at St. Joseph’s Church in the Upper Bukit Timah region. The incident led to the cancellation of all church services on Sunday, December 21.
Mohan is accused of placing three cardboard rolls filled with stone pebbles and sporting protruding red wires, held together using black and yellow adhesive tapes, within the church premises at approximately 7:11 a.m. Police believe the item was intended to appear as an improvised explosive device.
Preliminary investigations indicate Mohan acted alone, and authorities have stated that there is no evidence to suggest the incident was religiously motivated or an act of terror.
During the court hearing, Mohan attributed his behavior to sleep deprivation caused by his night shift work. However, the judge ordered a three-week psychiatric evaluation based on observations of Mohan’s conduct during the arrest and police operations. He is scheduled to return to court on January 12.
If convicted under the United Nations (Anti-terrorism Measures) Regulations, Mohan could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to SGD500,000 (approximately $386,757 USD), or both.
