Bangladesh Police Search for Suspect in Hadi Killing Amidst Protests
Dhaka, Bangladesh – December 22, 2025 – Bangladeshi authorities are intensifying their search for Faisal Karim Masud, the prime suspect in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader and former student protest leader. The news comes after Hadi’s death triggered widespread protests and vandalism across the country.
Hadi, a key figure in the student-led protests that led to the ouster of the previous government, was shot on December 12th during an election campaign in Dhaka and died on Thursday while receiving treatment in Singapore. He was a candidate for the upcoming February 12 general elections.
Addressing an emergency press conference, Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khandaker Rafiqul Islam assured the public that law enforcement agencies are actively working to locate Masud, though they currently lack specific information on his whereabouts. “We do not have specific information about Faisal’s last location. Our forces and intelligence agencies are working to obtain it,” Islam stated, urging caution against unreliable rumors.
While authorities are examining all possible angles, Detective Branch (DB) chief Shafiqul Islam indicated that the murder appears to be politically motivated. No political party has yet been definitively linked to the crime.
Hadi’s Inqilab Mancha party issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding tangible progress in the arrest of those responsible. His funeral on Saturday was held under tight security. Protests have been widespread since his death, including stone-throwing at the Assistant Indian High Commissioner’s residence in Chattogram. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their search and investigation.
