Los Angeles, CA – The entertainment world is reeling after Nick Reiner, 32, son of famed director Rob Reiner and photographer/producer Michele Singer Reiner, was formally charged Wednesday with the murder of his parents. The couple was found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home Sunday afternoon, sending shockwaves through Hollywood.
Reiner appeared in court briefly, only uttering, “Yes, your honor,” to acknowledge his willingness to waive his right to a speedy arraignment. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
The Los Angeles Police Department remains tight-lipped about the details of the investigation, but sources have revealed a troubling sequence of events leading up to the tragedy. The Reiners attended Conan O’Brien’s annual Christmas party Saturday night, where an argument reportedly broke out between Rob and Nick Reiner. Witnesses described Nick Reiner as being withdrawn at the party, standing alone and appearing disheveled.
The couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, 27, discovered their bodies when she went to check on them Sunday afternoon.
Surveillance footage captured Nick Reiner at a gas station near USC later that evening. He was apprehended by police shortly thereafter.
The Reiners’ other surviving children, Jake and Romy Reiner, released a statement, saying, “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
