Thu Dec 18 20:30:00 UTC 2025: Summary:
Will Muschamp is returning to the University of Texas as their defensive coordinator. Head coach Steve Sarkisian fired Pete Kwiatkowski and Duane Akina, paving the way for Muschamp’s return. This will be Muschamp’s second stint in the role, having previously led the Longhorns’ defense from 2008-2010, including their BCS title game appearance. Muschamp brings extensive head coaching experience from Florida and South Carolina, but his recent history includes less successful tenures and his performance at those positions are a mixed bag. The Longhorns are hoping Muschamp can improve their defensive performance after a slight dip in key metrics in 2025.

Will Muschamp Returns to Texas as Defensive Coordinator After Firings
AUSTIN, TX – In a move aimed at revitalizing the Longhorns’ defense, head coach Steve Sarkisian announced Thursday the dismissal of defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and defensive passing game coordinator Duane Akina. Taking their place is veteran coach Will Muschamp, who will return to Texas for a second stint as defensive coordinator.
Muschamp, who has been serving as a defensive analyst at Georgia for the past two seasons, previously led the Longhorns’ defense from 2008 to 2010, a period that included a BCS National Championship appearance in 2011.
“We are excited to welcome Will back to Austin,” Sarkisian said in a statement. “His experience and proven track record will be invaluable as we continue to build our program.”
Muschamp’s coaching career includes head coaching positions at Florida and South Carolina. While he saw moments of success at both programs, including an 11-2 season with the Gators in 2012 and a 9-4 season with the Gamecocks in 2017, his tenures ultimately ended with his firing.
The move comes after a season where the Texas defense, while solid, saw a slight drop-off in certain areas. In 2025, the Longhorns allowed 19.8 points per game and 4.9 yards per play, compared to 15.3 points per game and 4.4 yards per play in 2024, when they made it to the SEC title game and the CFP. Sarkisian is clearly hoping Muschamp’s leadership can restore the defense to its previous form as the Longhorns prepare to compete in the SEC.
The Longhorns faithful will be watching closely to see if Muschamp can recapture the magic of his previous stint in Austin and lead the defense to new heights.
