Fri Dec 19 02:40:00 UTC 2025: Spurs Upset Thunder, Advance to NBA Cup Final Thanks to Wembanyama’s Return

LAS VEGAS – In a stunning upset, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-109 on Saturday night, securing a spot in the NBA Cup final against the New York Knicks. The victory snapped the Thunder’s impressive 16-game winning streak and marked only their second loss of the season (24-2).

The driving force behind the Spurs’ triumph was the return of rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, who had been sidelined for 12 games with a strained left calf. Despite being on a minutes restriction, Wembanyama exploded for 22 points and nine rebounds in just 21 minutes, earning “M-V-P” chants from the enthusiastic pro-Spurs crowd.

“Wemby” displayed his impact with a plus-21 rating, injecting immediate energy into the team and the fans. Devin Vassell led the Spurs in scoring with 23 points, while De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle each contributed 22.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced the Thunder with 29 points, followed by Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams with 17 apiece. Despite their efforts, the Thunder couldn’t overcome the Spurs’ determined performance and Wembanyama’s electrifying return.

After trailing by three at halftime, the Spurs rallied, closing the first half on a 13-point run and later using a 10-point run in the third quarter to take the lead. The victory marks the Thunder’s second consecutive loss in Las Vegas in the NBA Cup.

The Spurs will now face the New York Knicks in the NBA Cup final on Tuesday night. The Thunder will look to rebound when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
