Tennessee Volunteers Eye Penn State EDGE Chaz Coleman in Transfer Portal
KNOXVILLE, TN – As the transfer portal looms, the Tennessee Volunteers are potentially eyeing Penn State EDGE rusher Chaz Coleman, according to sources close to the program. Coleman, a former four-star recruit from the 2025 class, announced his intent to enter the portal, which officially opens on January 2nd.
The Volunteers’ interest in Coleman is fueled by the recent hiring of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to the same position in Knoxville. Knowles, who now holds the DC position for the Volunteers, also knows Coleman from his Penn State time. This connection could be a significant advantage in Tennessee’s pursuit.
Coleman showcased his potential as a true freshman this past season, appearing in nine games and recording eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack. With senior Joshua Josephs likely heading to the NFL Draft, Coleman could provide immediate depth and experience to the Tennessee defensive line.
The Volunteers have already experienced roster attrition through the portal, including quarterback Jake Merklinger. However, the addition of a promising talent like Coleman would bolster their defense, which struggled relative to its 2024 performance.
It’s important to note that this year’s transfer portal window is condensed into a single period, running from January 2nd to January 16th. This means teams must finalize their rosters before spring practices commence.
The Tennessee Volunteers, under the leadership of their coaching staff, are expected to be active in the transfer portal, seeking to complement their incoming recruiting class and address needs on both sides of the ball.
