Fri Dec 19 04:41:29 UTC 2025: Bangladesh Engulfed in Violence Following Death of Radical Leader Sharif Osman Hadi

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh is reeling from widespread violence and unrest following the death of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, 32, a prominent figure known for his anti-India stance and pivotal role in the 2024 student uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, died in a Singapore hospital after being shot by masked assailants last week.

News of Hadi’s death ignited immediate protests across the country. In Dhaka, protesters set fire to buildings, including those housing leading media outlets The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, trapping staff inside. Demonstrators chanted emotionally charged slogans, demanding justice and accountability for Hadi’s death.

The violence spread to other cities, including Chittagong, where protesters gathered outside the Indian Assistant High Commission, chanting anti-India slogans. In Rajshahi, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence and an Awami League office were set ablaze.

The unrest has exacerbated already strained relations between Bangladesh and India. Anti-India sentiment has been on the rise, fueled by claims of Indian interference and the shelter given to Hasina in Delhi. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel and minimize movement.

Interim Chief Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation, calling for calm and promising a transparent investigation. He declared a day of national mourning in Hadi’s honor. Yunus also stated that the objective of the conspirators is to derail the election, adding that the attack was symbolic — meant to demonstrate their strength and sabotage the entire electoral process.

Police have launched a manhunt for Hadi’s attackers and are offering a reward for information leading to their arrest.

Bangladesh has been under an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Yunus since August 2024. National elections are scheduled for February 12, along with a referendum on democratic reforms.
