GHMC Cracks Down on Corruption, Suspends Two Tax Collectors

Hyderabad, India – December 18, 2025 – The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking a firm stance against corruption within its ranks, suspending two bill collectors for separate incidents of misconduct related to property tax collection.

Commissioner R.V. Karnan issued the suspensions after receiving complaints against the officials. In one case, a bill collector named Emmanuel allegedly pocketed a portion of a ₹1.45 lakh property tax payment from a property owner in Santhosh Nagar, which had been unassessed for 45 years. The owner, who never received a receipt, reported the incident after repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact the official.

The second suspension follows a report in The Hindu detailing claims of extortion by GHMC staff. A bill collector from Malakpet, identified as Manohar, allegedly threatened to double a property owner’s tax assessment unless a bribe of ₹10,000 was paid.

“These actions send a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated within the GHMC,” said a source close to the Commissioner’s Office.

According to sources, both suspended officials have been ordered to return the extorted funds to the property owners. Further investigations are underway.
